Hair Structure:

All hair is composed primarily of a protein called Keratin. Each strand of hair consists of three layers:

Cuticle (Outermost Layer), A protective barrier made of overlapping cells and is responsible for protecting and preventing damage to the inner structure, the Cortex.

·       When the cuticle is smooth and flat, hair appears shiny and is protected from damage.

·       When its damaged, your hair becomes frizzy and prone to breakage.

Cortex (Middle Layer), The cortex is where most of your hair’s strength lies.

·       It provides the strength, elasticity, texture and color of hair.

·       If the cortex is damaged, the hair can become brittle and weak, and it may break.

Medulla (Innermost Deepest Layer), mostly present in thick hair. Its role in hair care is minimal.

When we use heating tools, chemically processing (relaxers, bleach, dyes) and excessive manipulation of the hair, it weakens the integrity of the cuticle layer thus causing damage strands.

Hair goes through a cycle and grows continuously; it’s the growth retention that we struggle with.  "And Why We Ask"!

African American women struggle with :

Dry Hair
Breakage
Thinning Edges
Lack of Growth Retention
Heat Damage
Product Overload ("Product Junkie Syndrome")

Your goal is to RETAIN the hair you grow.

When your hair remains moisturized, strong and protected, length becomes easier to achieve.

WHY AFRICAN AMERICAN HAIR NEEDS EXTRA MOISTURE

Type 3 and Type 4 curls have bends and coils.

These bends make it difficult for scalp oils to travel down the hair shaft.

This means:

Hair becomes dry faster

Ends lose moisture first

Breakage happens more easily

Moisture retention becomes critical

THE 5 BIGGEST CAUSES OF BREAKAGE

1. Lack of Moisture

Dry hair breaks.

2. Excessive Heat

Flat irons above 400°F can permanently damage curls.

3. Tight Hairstyles

Constant tension weakens edges.

4. Skipping Deep Conditioning

Hair needs weekly replenishment.

5. Ignoring Scalp Health

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

Simple Steps To Longer, Stronger, Softer Hair

THE GROWTH RETENTION FORMULA

  1. Cleanse-Cleanse every week or no longer than 2 weeks, clarify once a month or whenever you have product build-up, toxic your scalp often. Always use a Sulfate Free Shampoo
  2. Condition/Deep Condition- It's a moisturizing treatment designed to replenish the natural hydration and oils that shampoo strips away.
  3. Hydrate/Moisturize- Apply hydrating leave in to add moisture, aid in detangling, and protect strands from becoming dry, brittle, and prone to split ends. Think of hydration as the first step and moisture as the next step in keeping your hair nourished.
  4. Seal/Protect- Use a spray or cream heat protectant, to prevent damage before using hot tools. Apply lightweight hair oil to ends to help seal cuticle. Keeps hair soft and smooth.
  5. Protective Styles- No tight braids. Extensions with no Tension. Scalp massages to promote Growth
  6. Trim- Maintain dry split ends and trim when necessary.

Always sleep on satin pillowcases or use a satin bonnet.

THE SECRET TO SOFT HAIR

First your hair need hydration

Water

The #1 Hydrator!

Most women focus only on oils.

Oil does NOT Moisturize hair.

Oil seals in moisture.

Our hair needs BOTH.  Hydration puts water into the hair shaft to improve elasticity, while moisture uses it to seal it in.
